How to Determine Which DVI to VGA Adapter to Use

    • 1). Look at the DVI connector on the back of your computer. If it has 29 pins, it's a dual-purpose connector and can connect directly to a VGA port with a DVI-to-VGA cable or adapter.

    • 2). Look at the video card on your computer for an additional VGA port. If there's no VGA port and the DVI connector has only 24 pins instead of 29, your computer doesn't support VGA and you need an electronic adapter or converter. Recognize a VGA port by a 15-pin trapezoidal "D" type connector with three rows of five pins each.

    • 3). Look in the manual of your VGA monitor to find the resolution specifications. Select an electronic DVI-to-VGA converter that creates a resolution compatible with your VGA monitor.
