How to Get Rid of Microphone Static

    • 1). Get rid of any background noise and turn off any electrical equipment that can cause electrostatic interference. Turn off devices such as computer screens or fluorescent lights and place your microphone away from loud electrical appliances such as your computer or washing machine. Make your recording environment as quiet as possible and test your microphone again to see if the static has disappeared.

    • 2). Use the process of elimination to determine which part of your microphone audio system is causing the static noise. Try a different cable to see if the static disappears. If that doesn't help, try a different microphone, different speakers or a different computer until you discover which piece of equipment is causing static.

    • 3). Replace or repair your microphone lead if you find that it is causing static. Music and electronics stores are often able to fix loose and shorting wires in your microphone cable. Certain types of cables, such as minijacks, are also susceptible to static and should be replaced by XLR or USB cables.

    • 4). Use a higher quality microphone if your cheap microphone is causing static. Inexpensive microphones often pick up unwanted noise and create static where high quality microphones do not.

    • 5). Replace or repair your amplifier or speakers if they are causing static. Speakers can have wiring problems just like microphone leads can, though the problem is often more complicated and expensive to fix with speakers.

    • 6). Replace your computer's sound card with a high quality card if you believe your computer is causing static. High quality sound cards are less likely to create static noise.

    • 7). Use a noise removing audio software program such as those available as a plug-in or effect in Pro Tools or Audacity. These types of programs will help remove noise and static from audio recordings. Programs like Pro Tools also have equalizers with which you can remove unwanted frequencies from recordings, which can help reduce noise and static.
