How to Reupholster Futon Mattresses
- 1). Take apart the old mattress covering carefully, using a seam ripper. If the covering has quilting stitches running through both sides, cut these as well. Keep the pieces of the cover intact.
- 2). Lay the pieces of the old mattress cover out across the new fabric. Use straight pins around the edges to hold the two layers together and use the old covering as a template to cut new pieces with pinking shears.
- 3). Unpin the old covering from the new pieces.
- 1). Pin the new covering pieces together along the seams with the right side of the fabric facing inward.
- 2). Sew along the pinned seams to secure the pieces together. Remove the pins as you go. Leave one end of the cover open for inserting the mattress.
- 3). Turn the covering right-side-out and slide the mattress inside.
- 4). Fold in the raw edges along the open side and hand-sew it shut. Alternatively, a zipper can be added to the end of the cover to make it removable.
