How to Paint Exterior Fiberglass Shutters
- 1). Remove the shutters from the outside of your house, unscrewing them with an electric drill with a screwdriver bit. Set up a work area outside with workhorses or a table. Save the screws for reattaching the shutters later.
- 2). Clean the shutters with a solution of ¼ cup of trosodium phosphate to a gallon of warm water. Wet them down with the solution and a sponge and allow them to sit for a couple of minutes to soften any surface soil. Scrub them with a nylon brush and rinse thoroughly. Air-dry the shutters.
- 3). Spray the shutters with a color as close as possible to the original color. Use a spray formulated for plastics that includes a urethane resin.
- 4). Store the shutters in the garage or shed for a week to allow the paint enough time to cure before securing back on the house, even though the paint dries to touch in 15 minutes.
