    • 1). Decide on the area you are going to use for your decal. Clean the surface thoroughly with soap and water. Tape the newsprint paper to the clean and dry area and sketch out the design of your decal. This will give you a good idea of what the decal will look like in the space. Sketch out the design of your decal on the large piece of newsprint paper. Sketch any design that you desire, but keep in mind that symmetrical designs make for an easier transfer from the stencil onto the contact paper.

    • 2). Using very sharp scissors cut out your newsprint design to make a stencil. Turn the stencil over and place it on the back of the contact paper. Secure the stencil with tape to the back of the contact paper. Trace around the stencil with the marker.

    • 3). Carefully cut out your decal by following the lines on the back of the contact paper. Save the scraps of vinyl for other projects or to continue with your design. When your decal is complete, start to peel back one corner of the backing from the adhesive.

    • 4). Start by adhering the sticky edge of the decal in the desired spot on the wall or furniture. Smooth out any air bubbles that start to come up underneath the decal using a plastic card. Continue the process of peeling off the backing and smoothing the decal until all of the backing is removed and the decal is smoothly placed on the wall. It may be helpful to find a partner to assist so that the decal doesn't get tangled as you peel and stick.
