    • 1). Place the clams into a sink. Run cold water over them for several minutes while pushing them around with your hands.

    • 2). Rub off any debris that might be stuck on the shell. Rinse off the clams well.

    • 3). Plug the sink. Add enough ice to cover the clams. Pour cold water into the ice until it also covers the clams.

    • 4). Add about 2 tablespoons of salt for every pound of clams. The salt will help kill bacteria on the clams and get rid of fishy smells.

    • 5). Leave the clams in the ice and salt to purge for three hours. Unplug the sink and then give the clams a final rinse.
