    Use a Home Highlighting Kit

    • 1). Determine if your hair extensions are lighter or darker than your current color. If your hair extensions are darker but are the same tone, you may not even have to color them, you can just have a subtle two-toned effect when you wear them. However, if the hair extensions are lighter, you will have to use a highlight kit.

    • 2). Open and mix the highlight kit according to directions. You will be highlighting your own hair, so be sure that it is clean and dry.

    • 3). Use the highlighting kit all over according to the directions. Thinner highlights look more natural than thick, chunky ones do and will blend with the hair extension color better.

    • 4). Allow hair to process according to home highlighting kit instructions and then shampoo out.

    • 5). Dry hair and now your hair should blend better with the hair extensions.

    Color the Extension at Home

    • 1). Determine if hair extensions are human hair or synthetic hair. If the extensions are human hair, you can most likely color them to match your current hue. If they are synthetic hair, you will have to use a rinse instead of dye.

    • 2). Use the same hair color kit in the same color to dye the extension hair that you used to color your own hair. If your hair was colored by a professional, ask her recommendation for an at-home color kit. Some salons even offer a hair extension color service.

    • 3). Paint the hair color on in thin sections making sure to thoroughly coat each strand of hair.

    • 4). Allow hair to process according to the hair color kit instructions.

    • 5). Rinse, shampoo and condition extension hair. Dry hair extensions by pinning extensions to a wig head.
