How to Become a Bail Bondsman in Louisiana
- 1). Get in touch with your state's Department of Insurance to find out what schools in your area offer the courses required to become certified. Aside from providing you with the necessary cirriculum to get licensed, these schools will have more specific details about any other requirements, as well as a list of local offices and contacts (see Resources).
- 2). Find a school, get registered, pay your fees and take the appropriate courses.
- 3). Complete and submit the Louisiana Producer's Application, Form 1136A, to the Department of Insurance (see Resources).
- 4). Determine where you want to work initially. Decide whether you want to immediately begin working for yourself or for an established bail bond company or agent in order to gain more experience and training before branching out on your own.
- 5). Complete and submit the Louisiana Licensing Application and Exam Registration Form to Thomson Prometric of St. Paul, Minnesota, along with the correct fees and the Prelicensing Certificate granted by the Louisiana Department of Insurance.
- 6). Schedule a date and time to take the written examination. Thomson-Prometric of St. Paul, Minnesota, administers the exam. To schedule an exam date with them directly, call 800-871-6457 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. central time or register through their website (see Resources). In Louisiana, exam testing centers are located in the following cities: Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Bossier City and New Orleans.
- 7). Study for and take the examination on the scheduled date. Get plenty of rest the night before the exam and wake up early so that you can grab a light breakfast and show up at the exam site a few minutes prior to the start time. Once you pass the exam, the Louisiana Department of Insurance will authorize the issue of your licenses and Thomson-Prometric will mail them to you.
