How to Improve Speaker Sound
- 1). Place the subwoofer, if included in the speaker system, on the floor. The ideal location for a subwoofer is in the center of the listening area, in front of the listener. Full-range speaker enclosures with an integrated subwoofer should be positioned with the subwoofer at the bottom of the speaker array.
- 2). Mount the remaining surround speakers on the wall, on shelves or on speaker stands. Speaker height should be at approximately ear level when seated or standing, whichever occurs most frequently during a listening session. Integrated speaker enclosures should be raised so that the top speaker is at ear level.
- 3). Measure the distance from each speaker to the central listening area with a string or tape measure. All speakers should be as equidistant as possible.
- 1). Look up ohm ratings on the speakers and amplifier.
- 2). Measure the distance of the longest speaker wire run with a tape measure.
- 3). Follow general recommendations to determine the proper wire-gauge, according the longest wire run. For standard 4- to 8-ohm speaker load ratings, use 16-gauge wire for runs up to 80 feet, 14 gauge for 80 to 200 feet and 12 gauge for runs longer than 200 feet. Using a larger diameter wire than is necessary will not affect sound quality or operation.
