Health experts worldwide view this trend as alarming and it is suspected to be contributing to the fact that one out of every two people in the world have a chronic 'lifestyle disease'.
Many more people have multiple ailments and conditions and many more people are not feeling 'well', are tired and lack energy.
This means that they also lack the ability and motivation to be active.
In general they are not enjoying their lives very much which is understandable if you don't have the strength and energy to live life to the fullest.
The ultimate responsibility for caring for one's own health and wellbeing falls squarely on each one of us.
You could ask yourself at the end of each day.
"Have I been active enough today, did I do enough vigorous activity that got my muscles working?" If the answer is a continual no, then you need to ask yourself.
"What can I do to break free from my sedentary lifestyle?" This shouldn't be a disappointing reminder if you are not doing enough activity to keep your body healthy.
There is great joy and pleasure along with a sense of power that we can get from a good workout.
Whether you like it or not our body needs physical 'work' to stimulate the hormones that instruct every single cell in your body to renew, replace and renew.
The human body is made and is programmed to be very active.
When you deny your body this you will be the one losing out.
Every system in your body will weaken along with your muscles, bone and joints.
Your energy will drain away and your looks will suffer.
Without the firmness and tone of the muscles underneath, your skin will wrinkle and sag.
And without strong muscles to hold your skeleton firmly in place your posture will take on an aged look.
In years and generations gone by, the aging process was a cruel and inevitable march towards sickness, frailty and loss of independence.
Anyone fortunate enough to reach the age of 70 or older usually looked hunched, shriveled and old.
Today, however, we know that many of the weaknesses and conditions that used to make old age so oppressive was just a lack of physical activity and not just the number of candles on a birthday cake.
If we take care of ourselves with the addition of proper exercise that works the muscles to keep them strong and functional they do not have to shrink and strength does not have to evaporate.
When you work your muscles you work the bones as well keeping them strong and dense so they do not become brittle.
Limbs do not have to become stiff, painful and inflexible with disuse.
Metabolisms (the bodies engine) do not have to slow to a crawl allowing excess body fat to accumulate and hang from our bodies in an unattractive fashion.
Taking care of ourselves means strength training exercise.
There is really no other way to keep everything in good working order so that you can live your life to the fullest.
Get some help setting up your program with a fitness professional so you not only learn the correct way to do the exercises but learn to perform them with the correct level of intensity (degree of effort) so you get the most benefit.
