Video: How to: Braiding Updos
Video Transcript
Hi, I'm Danielle Valiente with Atmosphere Salon and when it comes to creating braided updos, it doesn't have to be difficult. Here, we'll show you some tips for how to create braided updos. We're going to start off sectioning off a little bit of the front, because we'll leave that out, and directing back into the nape area. We're going to divide the back of the hair into two, and take an elastic, place one of the elastics lower, but you want it to be a little bit looser, so not super tight to the scalp, a little loose. And then the next one, we're going to place not too much higher, but just a little bit above the first one and still loose, as well. Take the first ponytail, split it into three, and braid a simple three-strand flat braid into the ponytail. Once you get to the ends, we're going to secure it with a clear elastic. This is a really fun one to do because, not only is it really easy to do on yourself at home, but it also looks really beautiful and very red carpet when it's finished. So, if you're going somewhere special, it's a nice one to place into your hair that won't take you too much time to do. And I've begun braiding the second ponytail, so it's like she's got two little braids, one higher than the other, and then securing the ends with a clear elastic. Whenever I braid in updos, you always have an option. You can either leave it very detailed, or you can open it up. For this one, I'm going to leave it more detailed and polished, so we're not going to do much with this braid, but if you wanted it more open, you can just pull on the edges of the loops of the braid, and it's going to open the braid up and give it more texture for you. We're going to start with our top braid, and move it into the direction of the bottom braid, and then pin, and then once down below, and then wrap the braid again, and pin once on top, and you may or may not need to pin again down below. We're going to take the end that's left of the braid and we're going to tuck it underneath that hair right above the ponytail on the left-hand side so it's not visible, so it's just hidden in there. Now, when we wrap the braid on the right side, you want to start tucking it underneath so that you hide the elastic, and we'll pin if there's still any showing. So, bring it over in the direction of the right braid and pin once underneath and once on top, and then wrap it and cover the elastics that are showing right on top, and now you've got your ends from your final braid that you can just tuck underneath so the elastic and the ends aren't visible, and then pin that so it's hidden. And then you can come in and tidy up wherever it needs it, so if you're seeing any of your elastics, just cover it, take a piece of the braid, cover over the elastic, and pin it. In the back, you'll end up with this beautiful braided piece that's very formal and ornate, and then in the front, just take a comb and comb that hair together and wherever you see your ridge is, you can do a little ruching to give that a little bit of lift. And that is how to create braided updos.
