    • 1). Find and attend a certification course in medical billing and coding. Make sure that the curriculum includes Medical Terminology, CPT Coding, ICD9 Coding, DSM Coding, HMO/PPO/Network Contracts, Physician Credentialing and Reimbursement/Denial Analysis.

    • 2). Find a job at a doctor's office or an internship to gain professional experience. Plan on spending three months to a year learning the trade.

    • 3). Set up your home office with a computer, ergonomical keyboard and mouse. Your home office should be in an area where you have ample space for supplies and room to work. A printer and fax machine may be useful in your home office.

    • 4). Write a resume and apply to positions at work-at-home medical billing and coding companies. Alternatively, create a business plan and spread the word that you are available to work as a medical biller and coder to local doctors and hospitals.

    • 5). Apply for a business license, if your city or state requires one. This step isn't required for jobs, but if you're going into business for yourself, then you will need a license.
