How to Partition a Hard Disk Without Losing Data
- 1). Open the partitioning utility in Windows by clicking "Start," "Control Panel," "System and Maintenance," "Administrative Tools" and "Computer Management." From the storage pane on the left side of the window, click "Disk Management."
- 2). Right-click any space on your hard drive that is labeled "Unallocated." Select "New Simple Volume" to launch the "New Simple Volume Wizard."
- 3). Click "Next" to begin the partitioning process.
- 4). Enter the size of the new partition in Megabytes and then click "Next."
- 5). Label the new partition by choosing a drive letter and then clicking "Next."
- 6). Decide whether you want to format the new partition. If you don't want to format it, click "Do not format this volume" and then click "Next." If you do want to format it, just click "Next."
- 7). Format the partition by clicking the "Finish" button at the bottom of the window. The new partition is created and all of the data on your old partition remains in tact.
