How to Make Silver Cake Frosting
- 1). Purchase silver gel food color. Gel food colors can be found in baking supply stores, as well as craft stores that have a cake decorating department. If you do not see silver right away, check the kits that are sold to tie in with popular children's movies, as these often have specialty colors not sold separately.
- 2). Cut softened butter into at least eight pieces, so it is easy to blend with the powdered sugar and cream. You can cut it into more pieces if you find that it makes mixing easier for you, but eight is the minimum for even blending.
- 3). Alternate pouring powdered sugar and cream into the mixing bowl, about a half cup at a time for the powdered sugar and 1 tbsp. at a time for the cream. After pouring each round of powdered sugar and cream, mash the mixture into the butter with your fork or mixer (optional). Add the next bit of sugar and cream only after the most recent amount has been absorbed into the frosting.
- 4). Mix vanilla extract into the finished frosting. You are now ready to turn your vanilla buttercream frosting silver.
- 5). Use a toothpick to stir the silver gel food color up thoroughly, making sure there are no chunks or lumps. Pick up a tiny bit of food coloring on the end of your toothpick and add it to your frosting.
- 6). Stir the silver gel food coloring into the frosting completely, and eliminate any streaks that may appear by stirring more vigorously. Continue to add food color in tiny increments on the end of your toothpick, until you have the shade of silver you desire.
