Carving Ideas for Jack-O'-Lanterns
- Choose a pumpkin carving stencil design for your Jack-o-lantern. Download free patterns from the Spook Master website. Tape the stencil design to the pumpkin, and use a black marker to trace inside the stencil lines. Remove the stencil, and use the lines to guide where you carve out the pumpkin. Free stencils include a bat, a gargoyle, a face with sharp teeth and a witch flying on a broom. Alternatively, purchase stencils of people, places, animals and even sports team logos.
- Carve the word "treats" out of a large, round pumpkin with a steady base. Cut out a large opening in the top. Scoop out all the seeds and stringy flesh. Once you have cleaned out the entire pumpkin, allow it to dry and then line it with orange or black wrapping paper or tissue paper. Fill the pumpkin with Halloween candies and treats. Place your treat-o'-lantern by your front door ready to hand out treats to the neighborhood trick-or-treaters.
- Use a sharp knife with a straight edge to cut out the top piece and any large areas. Cut the lid on an angle so the inside diameter is smaller than the outer diameter to ensure the top piece won't fall into the pumpkin. Alternatively, purchase a carving kit that includes a serrated saw at a craft store. Use an ice cream scoop or large spoon to remove the seeds. If you plan to place a candle inside, check to ensure any holes will allow for adequate ventilation. Prepare a flat spot in the bottom of the pumpkin for a candle without digging in too deep. Once you have the candle in position, check that, when lit, the candle flame is not too close to the top of the jack-o'-lantern.
- Use a water-based marker to outline a design on your pumpkin. Erase mistakes with a damp sponge, and try again. Avoid holding the knife in a stabbing position; adults should always supervise older children carving a pumpkin. Use slow, steady strokes as if sawing. Work on areas in the center first and then outward. Carve out large pieces in sections. Use a utility knife for small details. A potato peeler's tip is ideal for carving out small curves and circles.
