How To Paint Exterior Shutters
- 1). Use a screwdriver to remove the exterior shutters from the home's facade. You may need to do a bit of initial prying with the back end of a hammer to reach the screws. If the shutters have been nailed onto the house, simply pry them loose by inserting the end of the hammer underneath the outer edge and prying gently.
- 2). Remove the hardware from the shutters. Use a sharp paint scraper to remove any chipped or flaking areas of paint. Sand the shutters with an electric sander with fine gauge sandpaper. Brush away the sanding dust with a clean paintbrush.
- 3). Lay the shutters across two saw horses. Paint the front side of the shutters and allow about an hour of drying time. (Allow for additional drying time in humid weather.) If the shutters are made of metal, you may prefer to spray the paint on. Keep a paintbrush handy, however, to catch and smooth out any drips. Flip the shutters over and paint the back sides. Even though the back of the shutters aren't exposed, they can be seen.
- 4). Allow the back of the shutters an hour to dry, then flip them back over and apply a second coat of paint to the front of the shutters. A second coat isn't necessary for the back side of the shutters. Allow about eight hours of drying time before preparing to rehang the shutters.
- 5). Reattach any hardware removed from the shutters. Using a screwdriver, re-attach the shutters in their places on the exterior of your home.
