    Tassels

    • 1). Sew tassels to the bottom of curtains or shades. Choose a tassel in the main color if the fabric is a print or in a contrasting shade if it's a solid color. Pin the tassels to the bottom to make sure they hang straight, then sew them on.

    • 2). Tie back long curtains with tasseled ropes. Handle them carefully so they don't tangle as you work.

    • 3). Sew tassels in a contrasting shade on the four corners of a plain pillow or seat cushion. Sew tassels onto the ends of table runners as a finishing touch; attach them so they drape gracefully over the sides.

    • 4). Attach a tassel to the peak of a winter hat so it drapes down the side as a lively accent. Sew tassels to the ends of long scarves to add a fun touch to your wardrobe.

    • 5). Combine tassels and trim on tablecloths. Choose trim in an appealing pattern in a color that's complementary to the main fabric, then choose tassels in the same color but in a different shade, either darker or lighter. Sew the trim 1 or 2 inches from the fabric edge and the tassels 1/2 inch apart, to allow them to hang freely.

    Trim

    • 1). Buy ribbon as trim for baby clothes or to thread through the folds in fabric curtains as a tie back. Combine two complementary colors of ribbon for a bold statement or braid three ribbons together.

    • 2). Glue trim as a border on cuffs, collars and hems of shirts, skirts and pants. Apply fabric glue to the back of the trim, press it against the fabric and hold it in place until it gets tacky and sticks.

    • 3). Create a tailored look for a jacket by gluing a 1/4-inch ribbon around the edges in a darker or contrasting shade. Hold the trim in place with straight pins and glue small sections at a time.

    • 4). Embellish a golf or tennis hat by adding trim in a sporty theme around the brim.

    • 5). Sew two or more complementary types of trim in a checkerboard pattern on a tablecloth or lap rug. Lay the trim along the cloth and secure it with pins, then sew the trim on for a stronger hold than glue can provide.
