Decorating a Wood Fireplace Mantel

    • 1). Choose a decorating style, such as rustic, modern, traditional or country. Apply it consistently in furnishings and accessories to give your room and fireplace a harmonious, finished appearance.

    • 2). Hang a large photo, print or painting centered above the mantel. Choose a collection of vases in one or two colors from the artwork to display on one side of the mantel. Place two brass or glass candlesticks with candles in a complementary color on the other side to provide balance.

    • 3). Add the appearance of height to your fireplace. Place a lush, green trailing plant, such as English ivy, in a light-colored container on one corner of your mantel. Allow the vines to trail about halfway down. Be sure the vines do not hang over the fireplace opening.

    • 4). Display antique wood toys on a lace mantel cloth. Place an antique mantel clock in the center. Fill out the display from the center out to the corners, with smaller items nearer the center and tall, narrow items on the ends.

    • 5). Stack old books on your wood fireplace mantel. Brace the book collection with a pair of wood-carved bookends. Leave enough space at one end of the mantel to artistically arrange a pair of antique reading glasses and a candleholder carried by a handle.

    • 6). Light up your fireplace mantel with a tall, narrow lamp topped by a small lampshade on one end. Place a collection of framed family photographs across the mantel. Balance the other end of the mantel with a tall, narrow clear vase filled with silk flowers.
