How to Make a Double Crochet Foundation
- 1). Chain 15 stitches to form your foundation chain, also called a chain stitch. Chain stitch by making a slipknot at the end of the yarn and placing the loop over the shaft of the crochet hook.
- 2). Wrap the yarn around the hook from back to front and insert your crochet hook into the loop. Draw the yarn and the hook through the loop to make a new loop or chain. You have completed one chain stitch.
- 3). Repeat the process to the end of the row. Add three extra chain stitches for your turning chain. This is the starting point of your double crochet foundation row.
- 1). Wrap your yarn over the hook from back to front. Insert the crochet hook in the fourth chain stitch from hook. Wrap the yarn over the hook and draw the yarn and hook through the chain stitch. This produces three loops on the crochet hook.
- 2). Wrap the yarn over the crochet hook again and draw the hook and yarn through the first two loops on the crochet hook. Wrap the yarn over the hook and draw the crochet hook through the last two loops on the hook. You want to leave one remaining loop on the crochet hook. You’ve completed one double crochet stitch.
- 3). Complete your double crochet foundation row. Work a double crochet stitch in the next chain stitch and in each stitch across to the end of the row. Count the first double crochet stitch as the turning chain. You’ve completed 16 double crochet stitches and accomplished a double crochet foundation row.
