Plan the design you want to paint on your dinnerware. Draw the design out on a piece of paper or use the stencil to create the design layout that you want to recreate. You may need to alter the design slightly for plates versus bowls versus cups, etc.

    • 2). Identify or mark the colors you want to use on each part of the design. You can paint a sample on the paper design or simply mark the colors down on each design piece. For example, you can color in a leaf on the design template to be green or simply write "green" on the area where the leaf is.

    • 3). Create the design on your dinnerware. You can paint the design on freehand if you can paint. If you need to draw the design on it or stencil the design on the dinnerware first, do it with pencil so that when you paint over it, you won't be able to see the drawing marks.

    • 4). Add a clear gaze over the entire piece. The glaze seals in the acrylic paint and helps protect it from chipping, flaking or other damage.

    • 5). Fire the dinnerware in a kiln. The kiln heats the ceramic piece to a high enough temperature to dry the acrylic paint and the clear glaze into the ceramic.
