Working on set or with celebrities  can be an exciting part of your career as a hair stylist. These jobs are usually a bit high-stress, but you can rest easy knowing that you can create any style when you have the right tools and products.

A hairstylist is only as good as their tools, and if you're looking to explore a career in editorial hairstyling, then having the right tools in your kit is essential.  Below we'll be breaking down the must-have tools that most editorial stylists can't live without. Read on to help you build your kit for a successful career as an editorial hairstylist.

1. Curling Wand

This versatile styling tool is a must-have when working on set. You can create perfect spirals or a messy wave with a curling wand, and the effect usually comes out more natural looking than using a classic curling iron.

2. High-Powered Blow Dryer

One of the most popular blow dryers among hairstylists is the Twin Turbo. I was an avid user of this dryer for years because its long lasting, powerful, and has steady air flow. Recently I decided to shy away from my instincts and purchase a light-weight, ionic blow dryer by CHI. At first I was disappointed with the weak air flow and the overall flimsy feeling of the blow dryer, but after a few weeks, I became hooked.

When working on set you're often not left with a lot of time, and anything that can speed up the styling process will be worth having in your kit. These lightweight, ionic blowdryers dry the hair quickly and leave the hair smooth, shiny and frizz free. I'm officially hooked!

3. Mason Pearson Brush

If an editorial stylist could only have one brush in their kit, it would be the Mason Pearson. This brush has a cult following for being the goto option among stylist, models and celebrities. This brush glides through the hair, making it the perfect option when its time to brush out a curling-set or for smoothing out a high ponytail.

A Mason Pearson brush doesn't come cheap, but they are of extremely high-quality, and if you take care of it, one could last you a lifetime.

4. Hair Extensions

Every editorial styling kit should contain some extra hair. Most of the looks that you see in the magazines or on the runway contain hair extensions to give the style a boost. Pick up a few packs of hair from your local beauty supply, about three colors should do (dark, medium, light) and keep them in your kit for when you need a little extra hair.

Make sure to look for 100% natural human hair extensions, and don't feel like you have to spend $200 on a pack of hair. There are plenty of options that you can get for around $30 that are perfect for temporary looks.
