How to Dye Hair So Dye Can Be Hidden
- 1). Decide where you want your streaks to go. You can dye a streak or two beneath your bangs, several chunks framing your face or highlights around your whole head. Consider your haircut and the ways you normally style your hair when deciding where to add streaks. Longer hair with even-length layers works best for completely hidden streaks.
- 2). Cut 4-inch by 6-inch strips of foil for each streak you plan to dye.
- 3). Mix the dye with the activator, if necessary. Read the instructions for your hair dye thoroughly because each brand requires different developing times.
- 4). Separate a 1/4-inch section of hair you want to dye and place a foil piece beneath the strip of hair and against your scalp.
- 5). Apply the hair dye to your strip of hair using the hair paint brush, starting at your scalp and working toward the end. Coat the entire strip of hair thickly and evenly from root to tip.
- 6). Fold the piece of foil so both ends are touching your scalp and bend the other edges together like an envelop. Ensure all of the dyed hair is in the foil, and secure the foil in place with a hair clip.
- 7). Repeat Steps 4 through 6 for each streak of hair you want to dye, and let the dye develop for the shortest amount of time recommended in the dye's instructions.
- 8). Remove one piece of foil from a streak and wipe away excess dye to see if the dye has reached the intensity you want. If not, refold the foil over the hair and let it develop for a few more minutes. Once the dye has reached your desired intensity, remove all of the foil pieces and rinse your hair until the water runs completely clear, then dry your hair as usual.
