Ways to End a Boring Conversation

    Attitude

    • The art of ending a conversation politely resides in the attitude used to end it. If one can remain upbeat and happy about ending the conversation, then the other person is less likely to feel let down by the end of the talk. Sincerity and appreciation of the other person are important to let her know that you are not rejecting her, but want to move on to another conversation.

    When to End It

    • A conversation can be ended at any time, but there are some points that work better than others. For instance, it is easier to escape a conversation when there is a lull in the talk than to interrupt in the middle of the story. If the person does not seem to ever come to a lull, however, it may take interrupting a story in order to get out. If the conversation has gone on for more than 10 minutes, if the person is noticeably scanning the room or if the person is monopolizing the conversation, it is probably time to end the conversation and move on.

    How to End It

    • Honesty and tact are key in ending boring conversations. It is a good strategy to move away when another person has joined the conversation. Aside from that, phrases such as, "Well, it has been nice talking to you," and "I'd like to get something else to eat," can help make the escape palatable to both parties. Most people can take the hint gracefully. Excusing oneself to the restroom is also acceptable. It is important to remember that honesty, when delivered tactfully, is not out of the question. If there are others to speak with, then say, "There are some others I would like to speak with, but it has been great getting to know you."

    Say Good-Bye

    • In order to be polite, it is important to say goodbye to the conversation partner no matter how boring the conversation may have been. The person may not realize he is boring or may just want to have his opinions heard. There is no reason to be rude, inappropriate or abrupt with someone who is unaware of the effect he has on others. However, there is no reason to be shackled to the person for an evening, either. Say goodbye with a good, upbeat attitude.
