How to Knit a Long Hat
- 1). Cast 96 stitches onto the size seven circular needle. Place a stitch maker. Join the stitches, being careful not to twist the work. Work for two inches in knit one, purl one rib.
- 2). Begin knitting in stockinette stitch. When working in the round, you do this by knitting every round. Knit until the piece measures seven inches.
- 3). Work eight stitches at the beginning of the next round, then place a marker. Work eight more stitches, place a marker, then repeat for the rest of the round. You’ll have 12 sections of eight stitches each. You can use markers that are a different color from the marker at the beginning of the round so that you know which is the beginning.
- 4). Knit two together at the beginning of the next round, then knit until you come to the next marker. Slip the marker, knit two together, then knit until you reach the next marker. Repeat this all the way around, always knitting two together after you slip the marker. This is the decrease round.
- 5). Work 15 rounds in stockinette stitch, then work the decrease round. The rest of the hat is worked in this fashion, working 15 plain rounds followed by a decrease round. Continue working until you have 12 stitches left. You may switch to the double-pointed needles when the hat becomes too small for the circular needle.
- 6). Knit two together at the beginning of the next round, then repeat all the way around. Remove the markers as you go. You’ll have six stitches left.
- 7). Cut the yarn, leaving a six-inch tail. Thread this tail onto the large-eyed yarn needle, then weave the yarn through each of the six stitches. Pull the top closed.
- 8). Weave the yarn ends in securely.
