How to Become a Dump Truck Owner & Operator
- 1). Obtain a Commercial Drivers License, or CDL as it is commonly called. Find an institute of training close to your home that offers a CDL, such as truckschool.com.
- 2). Search for a job with an employer who is an expert when it comes to dump trucks. Locate a dump truck driving job by working with the career services office of your truck training school provider. Allow them to place you with a company that has a good reputation in the dump truck driving industry, so that you will be able to obtain the experience you need to own and operate your own business successfully in the future.
- 3). Save money and work hard. You will need years of driving experience and savings to obtain your own company. Save money for the down payment of your first dump truck (which can be over $20,000), the needed vehicle insurance and other funds so that you will not have to struggle financially once you own and operate your own company.
- 4). Purchase your vehicle. After paying your dues while working for another dump truck driving company for about four years, you should be able to buy your own dump truck because you have the required experience, money to finance the truck, and the essential work contract that the trucking company will require for the purchase of your dump truck. This contract will allow you to work as a dump truck driver or owner operator during a set period of time for a specific company.
- 5). Look for work. Place advertisements in your area newspaper, Yellow Pages stating you are a dump truck driver, or respond to jobs that are placed on job sites such as indeed.com for dump truck drivers. Ask any other dump truck drivers you know if they know of any jobs they have turned down but you may desire.
