Wedding Party Attire Etiquette

    Bridal Gown

    • It's sometimes best to pick out a bridal gown before choosing any of the attendants' clothing. Once a bride knows what dress she will be wearing, it's easier to set the tone for what the rest of the wedding will look like. If a bride is in a simple, understated dress, the bridesmaids should not be in over-the-top fancy dresses.

    Groom's Attire

    • The groom's attire is also a reflection of the wedding style. A tuxedo with tails looks inappropriate at a casual, afternoon wedding. If the groom does decide to wear a tuxedo, it is acceptable for him to rent one instead of buying it. Renting a tuxedo can also help the groomsmen to coordinate their look.

    Bridesmaids

    • According to wedding etiquette, it is the bridesmaids' duty to buy their own dresses and shoes. Brides should be mindful of this when picking out a dress since not all bridesmaids will necessarily have lots of money to spend. Also, it's very likely that they will only wear their dress once. Brides get to choose which dress their bridesmaids wear, but brides should consider what looks good on their bridesmaids. Also, the color of the bridesmaids dresses should match the colors being used to decorate the wedding, or it should be a neutral color.

    Groomsmen

    • Groomsmen should wear something that is similar or matches the groom. Like bridesmaids, groomsmen are responsible for paying for their own attire. An easy way to coordinate what the groomsmen wear is for the bride and groom to go to a tuxedo rental facility and pick out a particular style and color, and have the groomsmen rent the clothing for the wedding day.

    Parents

    • Brides rarely pick out what the mothers of the bride wear, but they can have a say in the color. The mother of the bride and the mother of the groom should communicate before buying dresses so they look coordinated (not matching) for pictures. If the groom is wearing a tuxedo, then the father of the bride should wear a tuxedo. The father of the groom does not need to coordinate with the bride's father.
