Decorative Foam-Ball Crafts

    • Foam balls come in a variety of sizes and can be used in all kinds of craft projects. They work particularly well in themed and seasonal projects. They are also popular for school crafts and are easily glued together and painted. Depending on the foam, you may even be able to carve them.

    People

    • You can make your own small dolls using foam balls for the heads and attaching them to old-fashioned wooden clothespins. Glue the ball to the top of the clothespin and let it dry. Afterward you can glue yarn or play hair to the top and paint on a face. Some people like to make small clothes for the dolls, but you can also paint them on. You can glue on small sticks such as toothpicks (or craft sticks cut in half) to represent arms. Non-water-based paints work best on foam, since most water-based paints tend to "bead" on synthetic surfaces.

    Snowmen

    • Snowmen make a fun group or classroom project. Foam balls are available in sizes ranging from tiny to several inches or more in diameter, so you can make an entire village worth of snowmen in a variety of sizes. All you need for one snowman is three balls: a small, a medium and a large one. Glue these balls together with the largest on the bottom and the smallest on top. After they dry you can glue googly eyes to the smallest ball. A toothpick broken in half and painted orange works well as the nose. Small round foam stickers can be used for the buttons on the middle ball and tiny hats are relatively easy to find at craft stores. You won't even need to paint your snowmen.

    Carved Pumpkins

    • Making pumpkin shapes in foam should only be done by an adult. Using a large foam ball (6-inch circumference or more) and a box cutter you can make a very attractive "pumpkin." Use a pen to draw a simple face on the ball, then use the box cutter to carve out the face. If you are still feeling ambitious when you are finished doing this, you can try carving and shaping the foam into a more authentic pumpkin shape by cutting vertical lines into the ball. When you have finished carving, paint the outside of the ball orange. You can also paint thin vertical lines on it. Paint the hollowed-out facial features black and you should have a cute pumpkin decoration for Halloween.
