Paint is the easiest and least expensive way to transform a child’s nursery. There is more that can be done with paint than just painting the walls a single color. It is possible to create an entire theme just using paint. Stencils and free-handed painting combined with solid colors work together to produce nursery walls that are full of interest. - A painted alphabet is a theme that works well in a nursery. This theme works best with a light color of paint on the entire wall with the letters stenciled over the walls as a border. The letters can be painted like blocks, or they can be painted directly onto the wall. Objects or animals that match the sounds of the letters also work well with this paint theme. A variation on this theme is to paint words, such as passages from children’s stories, onto the nursery walls.
- Primary colors are a favorite paint theme for nurseries. The primary colors red, blue and yellow are cheery and bright, making them ideal for a nursery. Red and yellow also are some of the first colors to stimulate and hold a baby's attention, making them a good choice. Primary colors work best as accent colors, so the nursery is not overwhelmed.
- Basic shapes, such as circles, squares, triangles and rectangles also make a nursery theme that holds interest for children and babies. The shapes can be painted together on an accent wall, or they can also be used around the top of the room as a border. Shapes are easily painted with the help of stencils.
- A painted garden is a nursery theme that can provide interest or education. Painting flowers and bugs along the walls makes a friendly environment for young children. A baby girl's nursery can have flowers and bugs in pastel or pink-tinted colors. A unisex nursery can employ more primary colors, browns and other vibrant hues.
- A jungle paint theme also works well in a child’s nursery. Jungle grass can be painted freehand along the walls. Jungle animals can be added with stencils or by hand. A jungle theme works best if only one or two walls are heavily painted, with the other walls providing a solid color base. This avoids overwhelming the room with color.
- A sports-themed nursery is popular for both boys and girls. Boys' nurseries tend to focus on baseball, football and basketball. Girls' sports nurseries may focus on soccer, softball, volleyball or cheerleading. A mixture of boys' and girls' sports can work for a shared nursery.
- Pastel colors provide a soft, soothing color palette for the nursery. One or two pastel colors can be painted together, or a mixture of pastel colors can work in a more abstract pattern.
