Homemade Flip-Flop Trunks
- Obtain a pair of solid light-colored swim trunks, a pair of flip-flops, printer paper, a pencil, carbon paper and fabric pens. Also obtain two pieces of cardboard as long as the flip-flops. Trace the outline of each flip-flop on several pieces of regular paper. Use these outlines to design a pattern for the flip-flop prints. When you achieve a pattern you like in one flip-flop, copy that pattern into an outline of an opposite flip-flop to get a matching pair of flip-flop patterns.
Lay out the trunks on a flat surface in a well-ventilated area. Slide a piece of cardboard into the left leg of the trunk, set a piece of carbon paper on top of the leg, over the cardboard. Set the left flip-flop pattern on top of the carbon paper, and trace over the pattern with the pencil. Remove the pattern and the carbon paper, and fill in the pattern with the fabric markers. Repeat what you've done to the left leg with the right leg. Follow the manufacturer's directions for setting the fabric ink. - Learn to make your own steamer trunks, and personalize them with the theme of flip-flops and swim trunks. Cut sponges into various sizes of flip-flops and swim trunks. Get spray paint of various colors and newspapers. Set the trunk in a well-ventilated area on some newspaper. Lay out newspaper near the trunk. On the newspaper near the trunk, set down a sponge, and uncap a can of spray paint. Spray the top of the sponge with the spray paint, pick an area of the the trunk and press the spray-painted sponge onto that area. Repeat spraying and pressing until you run out of room or just like the way it looks. Alternately, if woodworking is not a desired option, obtain pre-made steamer trunks and give them a makeover with this theme.
- Make reversible, or "flip-flop" trunks for a doll. Take the waist and leg measurements of the doll. Obtain two thin, stretchy pieces of cloth, string scissors, a pencil, a needle and thread. Draw a half of a pair of swim trunks on a piece of paper making the waist slightly smaller than the doll's waist measurements, and making the legs as baggy as you want, just so long as the legs can pass through them easily. Cut this outline out. Set this paper pattern on one of the pieces of cloth and trace an outline with the pencil, then trace another one. Cut this pair out.
Trace and cut another pair on the other pair of cloth the same way. Sew each pair together, inside out, and flip one pair right side out. Set the inside-out trunks into the right-side out trunks. Sew the ends of the legs together as well as the the waists. - Add pockets in the shape of a flip-flop onto a pair of swim trunks. Draw an outline of a flip-flop on a piece of paper and cut it out. Pick the kind of cloth you want, and set the paper flip-fop on the cloth. Draw the outline of the flip-flop on the cloth using a pencil. Cut the cloth out, and hem the end of the flip-flop you want to be the open part of the pocket. Set the trunks on a flat surface. Position the cloth flip-flop where you want it to go. Pick a kind of embroidery floss you want and sew around the flip-flop, leaving the hemmed section un-sewn.
