Top Makeup Looks at the Met Gala 2015

The fashions at the Metropolitan Gala were unique and at times, over-the-top  to match this year’s theme China: Through the Looking Glass for the Costume Institute Benefit Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Rihanna took over the red carpet (literally) with her bright yellow fur-trimmed cape designed by Bejing couture designer Guo Pei with a train so long and wide, it took three people to help her ascend the steps of the Met.

Not to be outdone, however, Beyonce wore a very revealing Givenchy gown.

The makeup was also bold, with graphic winged eyes and red lips, but there were more subtle looks to complement elaborate gowns.  Continue reading for some of the top makeup looks.

Beyonce

Beyonce showed up nearly two hours late to strategically make her entrance at the Met Gala getting the red carpet all to herself.  Frankly, she would have been noticed anyway wearing a bejeweled Givenchy gown that left very little to the imagination.

As for the makeup, for Beyonce’s luminous skin, L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation was applied and topped with L’Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator in Golden and True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator in Rose on the cheeks.

For the eyes:L’Oreal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Endless Sea and Infinite Sky was used and then the upper lash line was lined with Infallible The Super Slim Liquid Eyeliner. The lower lashes and lash line were left bare to make the eyes appear larger.  The finishing touch was a healthy amount of Miss Manga Mascara on the upper lashes.

Rihanna

Rihanna made more of an impact with the Guo Pei cape (which took two years to make), than with her makeup, which was flawless (although I'm not keen on the near Vulcan eyebrow look).

Thickly lined, winged eyes were a trend at the 2015 Met Gala.

Fei Fei Sun

Celebrity makeup artist Maki Ryoke created the 2015 Met Gala makeup look for model Fei Fei Sun. "The inspiration for the look was [socialite/style icon] Babe Paley traveling to China in the 30s.”  NARS Carpates Eyeliner Stylo was used for the thick winged eye makeup and the gorgeous red shade on the lips is NARS Audacious Lipstick in Carmen.

Selena Gomez

Makeup artist Jake Bailey used Elizabeth Arden to create Selena Gomez’s beauty look for the Met Gala and to complement her Vera Wang gown.  Said Bailey:  “Selena's slinky Vera Wang dress called for an elegant look with a pop of color. I kept her skin fresh and relatively matte for a porcelain effect, and elongated her eyes with a sharp black line and lots of lashes and mascara.  I finished the look with a classic matte red lip.”

PREP
  • Selena's skin was prepped with Flawless Future Powered by Ceramide™ Moisture Cream to brighten the complexion and help smooth the appearance of pores.
  • A dab of Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour® Cream to soften the lips while applying the rest of the makeup.
  • Bailey continued to perfect the skin by buffing a small amount of the Flawless Finish Perfectly Satin 24HR Makeup onto the face and neck with a small kabuki brush.

THE FACE:
  • Bailey used Ceramide Cream Blush in Honey to warm up Selena’s cheeks, and then set her complexion with a light dusting of Ceramide Skin Smoothing Loose Powder.
  • Next he used NARS Contour Palette under the cheekbones to give them extra definition and finished with Beautiful Color Radiance Blush in Tearose.

EYES:
  • Selena’s upper lash line was lined with Beautiful Color Precision Glide Eyeliner in Black Violet, creating a sharp angle to give the look of a liquid liner (but it’s easier to apply!)
  • Next, Selena’s eyelids were dusted with Beautiful Color Eyeshadow in Smolder to add a touch of shimmer and pop.
  • For the finishing touches, Bailey applied a strip of natural mink eyelashes and coated them with Beautiful Color Maximum Volume Mascara in Black. He then applied two coats of the mascara to her bottom lashes for added depth.
  • The brows were filled in using Beautiful Color Natural Eye Brow Pencil in Natural Beige and set with Anastasia Brow Gel.

LIPS:
  • To add a pop of color and complement her “modern China doll look”, Selena’s lips were lined with Beautiful Color Precision Glide Lip Liner in Red Door Red and finished with Beautiful Color Moisturizing Lipstick in Matte Bold Red.

Jennifer Lopez

This wasn't my favorite makeup look for actress/American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez. The area around the eyes needed to be softened, but nevertheless, she looked stunning and she wore that red Versace gown.

Solange Knowles

Empire star Taraji P. Henson had soft and subtle makeup to complement her Balenciaga by Alexander Wang gown.

Kerry Washington

The Giles minidress Solange Knowles wore at the 2015 Met Gala seemed a bit difficult to maneuver, but her face, when not covered by her dress, was subtle and pretty. Celebrity makeup artist Miguel Ramos worked with NARS to create the 2015 Met Gala makeup look for Solange.

“Solange didn't want to take the theme of the Met Gala too literally but was still in theme with the front flap of the dress resembling a fan.

To me, the structure and print of garment resembled a black hole in the universe," said Ramos. Which is funny because this is exactly how Raven Symone described it on The View and the panel thought she was insulting the dress.

“The eyes are often referred to as windows to the soul,” he added, “we focused on a very captivating eye.”  Ramos used NARS Lysithea Dual Intensity Eyeshadow and Audacious Mascara (out this fall) for the eyes, and Fervor Dual-Intensity Blush on her cheeks.

Janelle Monae

Actress Kerry Washington was also true to form, with very soft makeup.

Zoe Kravitz

Zendaya's velvet smooth and soft looking face was done with soft smoky eyes and pink lips, framed by groomed and brushed up, thick eyebrows.

Sofia Vergara

Makeup artist Renee Garnes used NARS Cosmetics to create the 2015 Met Gala makeup look for Zoe Kravitz, daughter of actress Lisa Bonet and musician/singer Lenny Kravitz (who were also at the Gala).

“The inspiration for Zoe's look was the Chinese Terra Cotta Army meets the daughter of Aunty Entity (Tina Turner's character) in ‘Mad Max’,”  said Garnes.  Key products used were NARS Craving Dual-Intensity Blush and All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation.

Gabrielle Union

Actress Sofia Vergara looks gorgeous as ever, especially with those accessories (not talking about the gown or jewelry, I'm talking about actor Joe Manganiello.)
