Leisure Time on Lake Erie

What follows is some basic information about Lake Erie including information about its origins.
We then go on to discuss the various leisure time activities that are available on the lake with a particular emphasis on the opportunities for Lake Erie fishing.
Lake Erie is the shallowest of the great lakes at an average depth of about sixty feet.
The reason for this is that during the last ice age it was situated towards the south of the great ice flows.
This meant that the covering ice was comparatively thin and had a reduced erosive effect on the land.
As we see shortly this along with the temperature of the water has an impact on the fishing opportunities available on the lake.
Lake Erie is well known as the Walleye fishing capital of the world.
The ideal depth of the central basin provides some excellent fishing spots with Fairport harbour being particularly popular.
Other good spots are the Toledo shipping channel on the Ohio side and on the Pennsylvania side to the north of Presque Isle.
Depending on the extent that the Walleye migrate from the central basin there is some possible good action out near the North East Marina.
You can off course hire your own boat and make your own way onto the lake.
However you should consider hiring a charter captain that specialises in the type of fish that you are most interested in catching.
An average trip will last about 4 hours and you should ask about certain things such as if there is a toilet on board, and what if any basics are provided as part of the cost.
Also enquire what if any the policy is should you be forced to cancel.
Many charters have a no alcohol policy so if you intend to drink on board you need to establish this.
Anyhow whatever you decide to do make sure you have a good time and don't get too downhearted if you don't catch anything.
There is always next time!
