    System Requirements

    iTunes and Software Updates

    • ITunes is the default application that allows you to manage your iPhone's content. Whenever you connect your phone to your computer, iTunes displays it in the devices section. If iTunes is missing key components or outdated, it might not recognize your iPhone. Apple frequently releases software updates that can improve the operating system. They can include everything from bug fixes to software updates. As long as you have a valid network connection, the Software Update tool will search the Apple server for updates and alert you of necessary updates, so you can install them. Occasionally, the Software Update tool may find an update for iTunes. Installing iTunes updates may improve connections.

    USB Ports and USB Cables.

    • In some cases, connection problems may be attributed to USB ports and faulty USB cables. IPhone 3G requires USB 2.0 to function properly. If you're not sure if your iMac is compatible with your iPhone, check your computer's specifications. If your phone is compatible with your iMac, disconnecting other USB devices, and connecting only the phone to your computer may solve the recognition problem. If the connection problem persists, restarting your iMac may reset the USB ports. Using a different USB cable may also be helpful because there's always a possibility that the cable you're using could be faulty.

    Software Conflicts

    • Anti-virus programs can be very helpful for protecting your computer against malicious parasites such as Trojans, viruses and spyware; however, some of them can cause system conflicts that can lead to recognition problems when you connect your smartphone to your computer. Many anti-virus programs contain firewalls. Firewalls are designed to prevent unauthorized programs and applications from accessing system components and the Internet. If you've installed an anti-virus program, checking and adjusting the program's settings may solve recognition problems. Adjusting these settings may vary with different anti-virus programs, so refer to your program's documentation if you're unsure of the best settings.
