How to Write a Funny Birthday Card
- 1). Read many humorous birthday cards in various stores and shops. This will help you collect ideas, choose a topic and decide what is appropriate for the person and occasion you are writing for.
- 2). Observe the topics of humorous birthday cards. Age, insults, gag gifts and sex are often funny topics to touch on in birthday cards, but not for every person. Looking over topics will help you to brainstorm and come up with ideas on how to put a certain spin on a topic of your choice.
- 3). Choose the subject you would like to write about.
- 4). Look at your subject from different angles. Word play, exaggeration, role reversal and "What if...?" thoughts can help you come up with a good idea for your card. Keep in mind that a birthday card has a front page and an inside page, so you may wish to set up an idea or situation and then surprise your reader on the inside of the card.
- 5). Carry a pen or pencil and a notebook with you throughout your day.
- 6). Write down every idea that enters your mind with your pen and notebook, even if it doesn't seem funny at the time. Bad ideas can often lead to better ones and, conversely, hilarious ideas in one moment can seem flat the next day.
- 7). Edit and revise your card. Make sure spelling, grammar and punctuation are correct. Read the card aloud so you can tell if the idea flows naturally. Re-word if necessary. Make sure your card is appropriate for the occasion and will be understood by your reader.
- 8). Create your card yourself on card stock with your desired art supplies, or submit your ideas to greeting card publishing companies.
