How to Customize Sneakers With a Paint Marker
- 1). Remove the shoelaces from the sneakers. You won't need them until the shoes are finished.
- 2). Wash the sneakers with mild dish soap and warm water before painting. Scrub the rubber sole and toe with a soapy cloth. Scrub the canvas sides with a scrub brush. This removes dirt and grime that could muddy your colors.
- 3). Rinse the shoes until the water runs clear. Allow the shoes to dry completely. This may take up to 48 hours, depending on how wet the sneakers are.
- 4). Sketch your design onto the sneakers in light graphite pencil. This kind of pencil leaves a very light impression easily covered by paint. You can also erase if you want to change your design or you make a mistake.
- 5). Paint in the large details with medium-wide tipped paint markers. Fill in the background, large areas of flower petals or leaves and color in rainbows or graffiti letters. Allow the paint to dry overnight.
- 6). Draw in small details with fine to very fine tipped paint markers. Outline all of your artwork and add shading. Allow the paint to cure fully for 48 hours.
