How to Custom Design Your Own Purse
- 1). Decide on the purse's function. A purse that accompanies you to a formal event will be very different from the one you haul to work every day. Deciding on the function will help you decide how big the purse needs to be based on how much you'll usually carry in that particular purse.
- 2). Gather everything you'll carry in the purse on a regular basis. An evening bag may need just enough room for keys, identification, a change purse and lipstick. Daily use bags will need to be roomy enough for everything from your wallet to your sunglasses and cell phone.
- 3). Gauge the main compartment. Put the larger items that will be carried in the main compartment into a pile. Test the size by measuring pieces of paper and folding and taping them into a bag-like compartment to make sure everything will fit comfortably. You can also use a brown paper grocery bag or smaller paper bag and nip and tuck it to suit your size. Sketch the outline of the main compartment, noting the measurements.
- 4). Add any other pockets and details. Review the items you want to keep in separate compartments, such as your keys, cell phone, pens and lip balm. Gauge the size of these compartments by again measuring and folding paper and then deciding where these compartments should be. Some could be nestled inside the main compartment, while you may want others to have easier access and be attached to the outside of the purse. Sketch the secondary compartments onto the main compartment, noting the measurements.
- 5). Pick the strap length, extra details and materials. Decide if you want handles, a shoulder strap, both or another type of handle. Evening clutches may have a removable strap or none at all. Sketch the straps onto your design, noting how they will be attached to the purse. Decide what type and color of material you want the purse to be. Note any closures, such as a zipper or snap for the main compartment and other compartments. Decide on any other details you want to have on your purse. Add all this information to the sketch.
- 6). Get it made. If you are skilled at sewing and crafting, you may want to create your own purse by purchasing the desired materials. You can also find a company that makes custom purses based on your design (see Resources).
