Making a Roller Blind
- 1). Apply the fabric stiffener to the material, according to the instructions on the package. Allow the material to dry and then press it with an iron set on low heat. Do this before cutting the material to size, as the stiffener can shrink the cloth.
- 2). Open the roller blind kit and remove the roller. Double-check the window width. Measure the width of the window and the length of the roller to make sure they are compatible.
- 3). Cut the material width-wise so that it is the exact same size as the roller. The length of the material should be the same as the height of the window, plus a few inches to fasten around the roller.
- 4). Lay the material on a flat surface with the wrong side facing up. Fold up about a half inch of cloth at the bottom and secure it with a needle and thread, sewing as close to the cut edge as possible so that a pocket is created.
- 5). Remove the dowel from the roller blind kit. Use the saw to cut the dowel about 2 centimeters shorter than the width of the material and slide it into the pouch. Stitch the open ends closed.
- 6). Flip the fabric over and smooth it out on the flat surface. Measure about 1/2 inch from the top of the material and use the pencil and ruler to mark that point with a straight, horizontal line across the fabric.
- 7). Fasten a piece of double-sided tape along the pencil line. Lay the roller on top of the fabric, just below the tape. Make sure that the fabric-lineup line on the roller is face-up and that the pulley attached to the roller is on the correct side (consult the diagram that accompanies the kit).
- 8). Remove the paper from the top of the tape and stick it to the roller, lining the fabric up with the line marked on the roller. Roll the blind up by hand and hang it according to the instructions.
