Shake It Off Like Taylor Swift and Put Your Girl Friends First

If there’s one thing you can say about Taylor Swift, it’s that she loves her girlfriends. Taylor shares pictures of her famous friends often on Twitter and Instagram, and seems to spend as much time and energy nurturing her friendships as she does writing music.

Women sometimes get accused of cattiness or competitive behavior when it comes to friending each other, so let’s celebrate the positive role models when we see them.

Taylor seems to appreciate all the women friends in her life.

Here’s a few lessons from her famous friendships that we can apply to our own relationships.

Embrace Friends Who Are Opposite From You

At first glance, this friendship between Lena Dunham and Taylor Swift seems like it can’t possibly be true. After all, they couldn’t be more different. While both talented writers, they work in different mediums and seem to have completely opposite approaches to their craft. Swift pens out heartfelt autobiographical songs but channels 1950s fashion while Dunham is a talented writer and director but thinks nothing about appearing nude onscreen.

That’s all on the surface, though, because if you look closely, their friendship makes total sense. They’re both expressing their feelings about being young women in the world today, making their way through life and love. Their creative approaches to life keep them together as good friends for the long haul.

The lesson here is to seek out friends who are opposite from you. They can help you stretch outside your comfort zone.

Be a Great Listener

Maybe the reason Taylor has so many friends is because she’s such a good listener. That’s according to actress Hailee Steinfeld who said she and Taylorconnected a few years ago; she's like a big sister to me. She's the best listener. I feel like I can call or text her wherever she is in the world and she'll always be there.”

There is an art to listening, if you can master it, you’ll have loads of friends who always appreciate you.

Here’s more about active listening and how to make it work with your friendships.

Remember Your Friend's Birthdays

In July 2013, Taylor tweeted out a message to her frend Selena Gomez: “Happy 21st birthday to my friend, and the closest thing I've ever had to a sister.”

Birthdays are personal, and remembering a friend’s birthday really helps nurture your friendship. It shows a friend that you’re willing to put aside your busy schedule and just focus on them.

Make Time for Friends

While in London in June of 2013, Taylor was busy performing at Wembley Stadium and on the show Britian’s Got Talent, but that didn’t stop her from stopping in by Gwyneth Paltrow’s house. We haven’t heard too much about this friendship yet, which may mean the two are just acquaintances or that it’s in the newer stages of developing. Despite this, Taylor made the effort to say hello while in town, which is incredibly considering her busy schedule.

Taylor doesn’t mind hanging out with younger pals, as evidenced by her recent friending of the singer Lorde. While Lorde is seven years Taylor’s junior, the two seemed to find enough common ground to spend the day together in February 2014. Taylor shared an Instagram photo of them walking on the beach along with the caption “Bare feet in the sand on Saturday.”

You can bring people from different age groups into your life by by mentoring someone at work or school or just being open to a variety of friends.

Go to different events, ask people questions about themselves, and be interested in learning about folks as individuals.

No matter how many friends Taylor Swift has, she continues to make more. Lately we’ve seen her hanging out with Sarah Hyland (she shared a vine post of them singing and a photo on Taylor’s Instagram account) but she’s also hung out with Demi Lovato, Emma Stone, and more and continues to call them close friends.

Taylor has said “My friends are amazing and I’m so thankful to have them, [but] the ones that are like sisters to me are Selena Gomez and Emma Stone .

. . They can predict my thoughts; I’ve known them for so long it’s really cool to have friends that are that close.”

Expanding your social circle is a good idea. It puts less pressure on your friendships to be “all that” for you and also helps you feel less lonely. You can keep old friends close to your heart while you still continue to meet new people.
