How to Hang Wicker Basket Chairs
- 1). Determine which direction the ceiling joists run in the room the wicker chair is to be hung. Head up to the attic and check the direction of the joists up there. The layout will be the same throughout the house. Take a tape measure and measure the distance from the center of one joist to the next one. Jot down that measurement for later reference.
- 2). Choose the location of the hanging chair in the room it's being hung. The best way to do this is to set the chair on the floor to get a feel for its placement. Keep in mind that there should be at least a one foot clearance between the chair and any walls.
- 3). Locate the ceiling joist the chair will hang from. Go to a wall that is parallel to the joists. Remember they run the same direction as those in the attic. Measure from the wall to the chosen spot where the chair will hang. Ceiling joists are traditionally installed either 16, 18 or 24 inches on center. On center means from the middle of one joist to the middle of the next one. The measurement from the attic should be one of these numbers. Calculate the location of each joist starting at the wall to the spot where the chair is to hang.
- 4). Standing on a ladder tap a thin finishing nail into the ceiling with a hammer to see if the nail hits a joist. If not, tap the nail through the ceiling again, this time a half inch back towards the wall. Keeping pulling out the finishing nail and moving slightly towards the wall and re-tapping it in until the nail hits a ceiling joist.
- 5). Once a joist is located, find the two outside edges. It's imperative that the eye screw the chair will hang from is screwed into the center of the joist to get the strongest hold. Again repeatedly tap the nail into the ceiling to find the sides of the joist.
- 6). Mark the center of the joist. Check the diameter of threads on the eye screw. Put a drill bit in an electric hand drill that is slightly smaller in diameter than that of the eye screw threads. Drill three inches straight into the middle of the joist.
- 7). Insert the tip of the eye screw into the hole and start turning it. Insert the tip of a long screw driver through the eye of the screw when it grows too difficult to turn it with bare hands. Grip it simultaniously with both hands and turn clockwise until all the threads have disappeared into the joist.
- 8). Thread the bottom of an S-hook through a link in the chain coming off the top of the chair. Hook the top of the S-hook through the eye screw in the ceiling.
