How to Prevent Your Hair from Falling Out
- 1). Take your vitamins. Hair loss can be a simple case of mild malnutrition. If you have a vitamin deficiency -- even a mild one -- your hair will be one of the first things to go. Take a daily vitamin supplement appropriate for your age and health. B vitamins in particular can help reduce hair loss and often are prescribed along with treatments like Rogaine.
- 2). Drink plenty of water. Dehydration stresses your skin and your hair follicles, leading to hair loss. Eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day should keep you hydrated.
- 3). Eat plenty of protein. Hair is made of protein, so a high-protein diet tends to lead to thicker, stronger hair. You can get protein from fish, poultry, eggs, milk and cheese, as well as fresh vegetables. Fish might be particularly helpful because it contains omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D, which have been linked to hair loss prevention during chemotherapy.
- 4). Massage your scalp nightly. A 30-minute massage with almond oil stimulates blood flow to the scalp and keeps hair follicles productive. Use your fingertips, not your fingernails, to rub the oil into your scalp using gentle pressure and circular motions.
- 5). Get enough iron. This might be particularly important for women, who are more likely to suffer from iron-deficiency anemia, which can cause hair loss. Iron-rich foods include pumpkin seeds, tofu and quinoa.
