    • 1). Brush your dry hair thoroughly. Pull hair into a half ponytail leaving a 1-inch section of hair along the base of the neck. Pick up a 2-inch section of the hair left down, brush it well, then lightly spray it with hairspray.

    • 2). Hold the curling iron upside down and wrap the strand of hair around the curling iron with the clamp closed. Do not overlap the hair as you wrap it so the heat can distribute into the hair evenly. Wrap the strand around the curling iron all the way down to the tip.

    • 3). Hold the hair on the curling iron for 15 to 30 seconds, then release the hair down. Finer hair usually needs less heat time, while coarse hair takes a little longer to hold the curl. Curl all the hair in this way, making sure to brush each strand before lightly spraying it with hairspray and curling it.

    • 4). Give the finished first layer a very light mist of hairspray, then let down another 1-inch section of hair all the way around the head. Curl this section in the same way as the first, then give the section a very light mist of hairspray. Finish curling the rest of the hair in this way, curling 1-inch by 2-inch sections.

    • 5). Wait for gravity to relax the curls, rather than loosening the curls with your fingers. The curls should be a bit tight when you first finish them, but in 10 to 15 minutes they will relax on their own. It is OK to gently run your fingers through your hair once or twice, but overall the best trick for beautiful waves is a hands-off approach.
