Homemade Flowers & Crafts
- Recycle a cardboard egg carton by cutting each egg cup and trimming its edges. Paint the egg cups yellow inside and out. Each flower will use one egg cup. For the stem, tightly roll a piece of green construction paper and cello tape the end so it is secure. Flatten one end of the stem, which is where you will attach the flower. Cut leaves from green foam or paper and attach them with glue. Cut a petal template from a coordinating color of construction paper and glue it to the flattened end of the stem. When the egg cup is dry, glue it (open side up) to the petals and allow it to dry.
- Make giant flowers for props or playtime with colorful tissue paper. Start with eight large sheets (20 inches by 26 inches) and stack them. Fold the sheets along the shorter side in a one-inch accordion fold. Trim the corners so the edges are round; the flower will be a circular shape. When all the paper is folded, tie a chenille stem at the center point to secure it. Gently unfold each sheet of tissue paper, starting with the topmost layer, and ruffle it. Continue with each of the sheets, then tie the ends of the chenille stem around a tin wooden skewer. Cover with additional chenille stems if needed and the end result is a huge, fluffy flower craft.
- Make springtime baskets with heavy card-stock paper and a few paper flowers. Start by cutting a circle 16 inches in diameter, then lightly trace a seven-inch circle in the center. This is the base of the basket. Cut the outer circle into one-inch strips, which will be used to weave the sides of the basket. Next, cut eight strips of card-stock that measure one-inch wide and 24-inches long. Start weaving the strips over and under the radiating strips on the base circle. Secure each end with glue and continue weaving until you reach the top of the basket basin. For the basket handle, twist the strips around a chenille stem long enough to arch over the top of the basket. Glue or staple the handle the inside edge of the basket basin.
- Muffin cup paper comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Because they're made of paper, they also can be easily decorated with markers or crayons. Start with a half-sheet of blue paper and attach grass from strips of green paper. Draw stems on the paper with green marker, or cut short chenille stems and attach them with glue. Decorate the muffin cup papers with bright and bold designs and glue the center circle to the top of the stems. You can place buttons, glitter or foam shapes in the center of the flower for texture.
