Making a Chinese Paper Lantern
- If you need a new, relaxing hobby, look no further than the ancient art of Chinese paper lantern making. Chinese paper lanterns, or Chinese lanterns as they are more simply known, are attractive lanterns made of sand, a candle and paper. They are often collapsible for easy storage when not in use.
- Chinese paper lanterns have a storied history. Originally, they were simple devices of a purely utilitarian value to create light in dark places. Even in ancient times, their aesthetic value was appreciated. The lanterns have become more elaborate over time, using richly varied colors or fashioned into involved and complex shapes. It's not uncommon to see paper lanterns in the shape of dragons and other animals at Chinese festivals. Some lanterns even use heat from a candle to float through the air. These are known as "sky lanterns" or "fire balloons."
- The enduring appeal of Chinese paper lanterns also lies in the fact that they are easy to create, making this a perfect hobby to share with young family members. As they have served many different purposes in a variety of eras, Chinese lanterns have also been made from an assortment of materials. Before the advent of modern materials, artisans created paper lantern frames from bamboo, but now they can be made from light aluminum or plastics. Different types of paper can be used as well, as long as it is durable and relatively flame-resistant, like rice paper.
- Finished Paper Bag Lantern
Anyone can make a simple Chinese paper lantern using a small votive candle, sand and a paper bag. These are the same kinds of lanterns people often place around their yards on Christmas Eve. To make the lamp, decorate the paper bag any way you want. You can use markers, paint, glitter, or just about anything. After the bag is decorated, open it and place it on a flat surface. Pour 6 cups sand into it. Place a regular votive candle into the bag. Push it down 1/2 inch into the sand. Light the candle when you are ready. Bamboo and rice paper (for more intricate projects) are available in craft stores. For indoor use, small electric light bulbs can replace tea candles. Care should be taken when using these devices around small children and pets to prevent a fire hazard.
