    • 1). Wind the bobbin. Place the thread spool on the spool pin and the bobbin on the bobbin pin. Slide the bobbin pin to the right. Wind the thread around the thread guidepost with your fingers, then wrap the thread six or seven times around the empty bobbin. Hold onto the end of the thread and press the foot pedal to wind. Release the thread in your fingers when the bobbin winds. The machine stops automatically when the bobbin is full. Cut the thread with scissors. Move the bobbin pin back to the original position.

    • 2). Insert the bobbin. Open the bobbin cover, and lay the bobbin inside the case. Wind thread around the slot, leaving a 2-inch tail.

    • 3). Thread the machine. Turn the wheel on the right side of the machine forward until the needle is in the highest position. Place the thread spool onto the spool pin on the top right of the machine. Slip the thread under the upper thread guide. Pull the thread straight down and under the tension disc, catching in the spring and the thread guard. Pull the thread up and over the take-up lever. Pull the thread straight down, catching the wire above the needle assembly. Slip the thread through the hook on the needle assembly and thread the needle.

    • 4). Pull up the bobbin thread. Hold onto the thread in the needle and turn the wheel on the right forward, lowering the needle down into the bobbin case. Continue turning the wheel one complete revolution; the threaded needle catches the bobbin thread and pulls it up through the hole in the plate. Grab the thread with your fingers and pull it backward underneath the presser foot.

    • 5). Attach the presser foot. Slide the foot under the shank on the needle assembly, then align the bar on the foot with the slot on the bottom of the shank. Lowering the presser foot lever on the back of the machine snaps on the foot.

    • 6). Change the sewing needle. Place a piece of paper or cloth under the presser foot to prevent the needle from falling into the bobbin casing. Raise the needle to the highest position and loosen the needle screw. Remove the needle and discard in a sealed container. Insert a new needle by turning the flat part of the needle to the back and sliding the needle up as far as it will go. Tighten the needle screw with the needle tightening tool and remove the paper.

    • 7). Sew a test on scrap fabric. Check the upper tension and stitch length. If the stitches are loose or pucker, adjust the upper tension until the problem is corrected. Loosen the tension for puckered stitches, and tighten the tension for loose stitches. The factory setting is four. Adjust the tension one number at a time and sew another test. Lower the tension number to lessen the tension.
