    • 1). Fill a container with water. Either use hot water from the tap or warm the water in a microwave. Avoid making the water too hot. The water should be warm, but not scalding. If you use the microwave, allow the water to sit for several minutes to be safe. Test the water to ensure it is not too hot. Dip a corner of the cloth in the water. You should be able to touch the test spot comfortably. It should feel hot, but not burning.

    • 2). Wet the fabric once the water is at the proper temperature. Wring out excess water over a sink.

    • 3). Cut off a piece of plastic cling wrap large enough to cover the compress.

    • 4). Lie down on a couch or bed. Lay the compress on your face. The positioning will depend on why you are using the wrap. If you want to open pores, lay the cloth over the bridge of your nose and across the checks on both sides. If using the steam to treat sinus pain, place it across the eyes and down over the nose. Do not occlude your nostrils. You should be able to breathe comfortably.

    • 5). Lay the plastic wrap over the wet cloth. This will hold in the moisture and create steam.

    • 6). Place a clean towel over the wrap. Leave the compress in place until it cools. You may rewet or apply a clean compress if desired.
