Top 10 Work Week Essentials
I've based this work week essentials list on things I actually wear to work myself. I've built a solid wardrobe by relying on basics and then having fun by adding in great accessories and shoes. To keep it easy, I suggest finding a color theme for your wardrobe. Mine is black and white, which sounds boring but I have lots of variety with prints, color pops, multiple textures, etc. By having a color scheme, you can easily mix and match separates: it just makes great sense!
I love my black pants, and I like a variety of leg styles, fabrics and lengths. While I do have trouser style black pants, my favorites are a dressy twill skinny leg from White House Black Market. It's a seasonless black pant that looks great with either heels or flats (wide leg pants don't look as good with flats.) For a great leggy look, I sometimes wear extra-long bootcut black pants with extra tall wedges. Buy from Amazon »
I love a jacket or top with a peplum. It's an easy way to give yourself an hourglass shape but still look polished. It's feminine without being too fussy like ruffles. The great thing about a peplum top is that you can wear it out over pants or a skirt and look completely finished. Buy from Amazon »
It's a classic for a reason: there's a pencil skirt for every body. Not only is it sexy, it's also comfy if you choose a style with stretch. My favorite pencil skirt this season is a bold black and white stripe pencil skirt, which is a twist on basic black.More »
Truth be told, I have all sorts of shoes. But there are days when I know I'll be doing lots of walking so I prefer flats. My go-to flats have pointy toes because I just think it's a little sharper looking for work than ballet flats.More »
There's just something about a great menswear print that I love for the office. My favorite houndstooth piece is a bracelet-length cropped bold-print houndstooth jacket. It's timeless, trendy and Coco Chanel herself would approve.Buy from Amazon »
Ok, this piece is more undercover, but I never get dressed without wearing a cami shaper underneath. It makes your body look lump and roll free under knits. A necessity. If the bottom half of your body is the issue, don't skimp on body shapers: it'll change the look of everything you wear.Buy from Amazon »
In general, I hate pantyhose and the look of them. But at the same time, I have a rather noticeable ankle tattoo and there are days when I just don't want to show it bare legs. Seasonless black tights are a great solution. They are lighter weight and sheerer coverage than heavy opaque tights.Buy from Amazon »
Cardigans may sound boring, but there are actually so many ways you can wear them, that I never run out of ideas: I try prints, belting them, adding a color pop cami underneath, buttoning halfway, etc. More »
This elegant classic works on everything from pants to skirts. I love the look of a dressy blouse, trouser pants and chain belt. I'm a fan of belts in general as a finishing touch, but the chain belt is my favorite.More »
All winter I'm all about sweater dresses and booties for work. I love the ease of one-piece dressing. Knit dresses -- in everything from jersey prints to structured stripes -- are a staple. So easy to dress up with a statement necklace and bracelet.Buy from Amazon »

It's About the Details
How do I finish off my look every day? I like dark red lips, a statement necklace and bracelets. Lots and lots of bracelets. It's all about adding those elements that make your look personal, but still professional. Looking polished doesn't mean you can't add a bit of flare (I frequently wear shoes with spikes on the toes because it's just, well, me...)
