How To Teach African American Girls About Beauty & Appearance
- 1). Teach them to cultivate their inner beauty. Teach them how to treat others around them with respect and how to respect themselves in social situations and in future relationships. Also talk to them about developing their positive qualities such as patience, kindness, generosity and humility. Emphasize benefits of having these qualities.
- 2). Give them lessons on fashion, makeup and hair. For example, if you're mentoring teenage girls at your home and you want to teach them what are appropriate and respectable outfits to wear on a date and on a job interview, get magazines such as Essence, Ebony and Jet and point out specific articles that deal with this topic. Encourage to them ask discussion questions during the lesson.
- 3). Have the girls practice on their own. For example, if you just finished teaching them which clothes they should wear during different seasons of the year, divide your class into small groups and assign them each a season or occasion. Have a pile of clothes for year-around occasions. Allow each group to create an outfit on a team member and explain to the class why this fits the season or occasion. Give each group feedback and praise on the outfits they chose.
- 4). Show the girls profiles of beautiful and successful black women. Take some articles from Black Enterprise magazine or books you have at home and read to them articles about black women who work in fields such as education, politics, entertainment, business and law and are also attractive. Tell the girls that based on these profiles it's possible for them to achieve their dreams and look beautiful at the same time.
