How to Order Food for a Reception
- 1). Make a guest list and indicate which, if any, of your guests have dietary considerations. For example, mark a "V" next to your vegetarian guests, and a "P" for those with peanut allergies.
- 2). Set a food budget; this helps you focus on what you can afford. For example, if you have a small budget, you can automatically disregard higher priced items, such as filet mignon or seafood, and opt instead for chicken or pasta.
- 3). Determine your menu based on the reception's length. For short receptions of two or three hours, stick with appetizers or desserts. For longer receptions, such as weddings or anniversary parties, plan on three or four appetizers, a main course with side dishes, desserts and beverages.
- 4). Visit local catering companies or restaurants that provide catering to determine menu options and costs. Use your budget and menu as a reference point. Make a list of two or three caterers who best fit your needs.
- 5). Obtain a menu from each caterer and determine your needs based on the number of guests, dietary needs and reception length. Ask each caterer for a price quote.
- 6). Select a caterer from your list. While price is a determining factor, a more expensive caterer who provides better menu options or who delivers and sets up the food saves you time and frustration.
