• Skype is a Voice over Internet Protocol application available for a wide variety of platforms, including a mobile app version for the iPod touch's iOS 4 operating system. The Skype App, which is available in the iTunes Store, is technically called Skype for iPhone but also works with the iPod touch when connected to the Internet. The Skype app is free for download from the iTunes Store through iTunes on your computer or the App Store app on your iPod touch.
  
  

Free Features

• Instant messaging, audio chatting and video chatting with Skype contacts are free when using the Skype app provided you have a Skype name. This means that you have to use the app to contact someone who's also using Skype. If you already use Skype on your computer, you can use your Skype name to log in to the app. If you don't have a Skype name, you can create one for free when you set up the app. Video conferencing through the Skype app can technically work on a 3G connection but has better quality over Wi-Fi.

• If you want to use your iPod touch to make calls to telephone numbers, Skype offers reduced rates on calls to countries all over the world. You can use Skype to call both landlines and mobile phones. You must purchase Skype Credit to call telephone numbers. You can also use Skype Credit to send text messages to phone numbers.
  
  

Skype Credit

• To purchase Skype Credit, open the app on your iPod touch and log in to your account. Tap the "My Info" icon, and then tap "Skype Credit." Tap "Purchase Skype Credit." This will direct you to your account page, where you can choose the amount of Skype Credit you want to buy and set your preferences to automatically renew your Skype Credit if desired. Once your purchase is confirmed, you can use the Skype app to make phone calls and send text messages.
