Your Guide to Wearing Denim to Work

Offices have gotten a lot more relaxed these days, with many not only offering Casual Fridays but OK’ing jeans as acceptable attire, too. But this doesn’t mean you get a free pass to dress like a total slob. So how can you wear jeans to work while still looking professional? We’ll show you how in our ultimate guide on how to wear jeans to the office.

Stick to Dark Denim

Generally speaking, just because it’s ok to wear jeans to the office doesn’t mean you should show up in ratty jeans, a T-shirt and a baseball cap. You should still maintain a professional appearance, which you can absolutely do while being comfortable and stylish, too. One of the easiest ways to do so is by sticking to jeans that have a dark denim wash. They are dressier than faded blue denim and will make your outfit look instantly polished.

Plus, from bold bright colors to pastels, white and blacks, they are easy to pair with just about any top. The exception to the dark denim rule would be black or white jeans, which also look classy when worn at the office.

Don’t Wear Distressed Denim

Just like faded blue denim may be perceived as too casual, distressed denim or any kind of holes in your jeans are also a definite no-no. Yes, this is true even when ripped jeans are in fashion. Leave your ripped jeans, jean shorts and jean skirts for casual weekends at home and be sure to always hang your jeans out to dry if you’re looking to avoid rips and tears.

Try Skinny Jeans

When worn right, skinny jeans are fashion forward and definitely a cute look for the office. Pair your skinny jeans with a nice tunic and top with a blazer. You can show off your personal style by accessorizing with a long necklace or chunky boyfriend watch. Pumps or a pair of nice flats finish off the look, which also easily translates from day to night.

Consider Denim Trousers

If you feel your work environment may be ok with jeans but want a dressier way to wear them, try some wide-leg denim trousers. They look both polished and professional when worn with a nice tucked-in blouse or button down and often come in both high-waisted and mid-rise styles. Trouser denim looks best with a pair of high-heeled pumps to elongate the legs.

Check Your Jean Rise

As a general rule, you should only wear jeans to work that are either mid- or high-rise styles. Low rise jeans are only acceptable if they are worn with a tunic or other long top that hits the thighs. After all, no one wants to catch a glimpse of your stomach when you’re reaching for something or worse, plumber’s crack when you’re bending over to get those office files.

A nice blouse, button down or casual top paired with a blazer is a stylish and professional look when paired with any kind of jeans. Just remember to add some clean accessories and a nice pair of shoes to pull the look together. The way you accessorize your jeans is just as important as the jeans you choose to wear to the office. After all, the nicest pair of dark denim skinny jeans will still look lazy when paired with flip flops.

Unless your boss is wearing them or you work in a very casual office, you may want to pass on wearing any kind of denim leggings or “jeggings” to the office.
