The grandchildren of deceased U.S. veterans might qualify for financial assistance based on their grandparents' service in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force or Coast Guard. Various veterans and military organizations award scholarships, loans and grants to the descendants of veterans. The federal government also provides educational benefits to veterans' survivors, for which grandchildren may be able to qualify. - Veterans service organizations are nonprofit groups formed by veterans for assisting veterans and their beneficiaries. The American Legion is such an organization, with posts in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, France and the Philippines. It offers national and state scholarships to high school students. Grandchildren of deceased veterans may qualify for some of these scholarships. For example, veterans' grandchildren who are high school juniors and who complete a Boys State or Girls State program may apply for the Samsung American Legion Scholarship.
- AMVETS (or American Veterans) is another veterans service organization. It awards scholarships to high school seniors who wish to pursue higher education. Applicants must be children and grandchildren of U.S. veterans and active military personnel. Grandchildren of deceased veterans are also eligible.
- The Vietnam Veterans of America represents the interests of men and women who served in the Vietnam War. It established the Mike Nash Scholarship Fund to aid Vietnam veterans and their family members. Grandchildren of deceased Vietnam veterans, or of military personnel killed in action or missing in action, may apply.
- The Military Order of the Purple Heart serves the interests of veterans who were wounded in combat. This group offers annual scholarships to high school graduates. The grandchildren of veterans who were killed in action or who died from their wounds before they could join the organization may be eligible for the scholarships.
- Military associations are organizations that serve the interests of members of particular military units and divisions. Many of these associations offer scholarship programs to the children and grandchildren of members of their military units or divisions, including those who were killed in action. For example, the U.S. Army's First Cavalry Division Association, Army Aviation Association, Gamewardens of Vietnam Association and Navy League Foundation are a few military organizations that sponsor scholarship programs.
- Some veterans service organizations and military associations have ladies auxiliaries. Auxiliary members include mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, granddaughters and other descendants of veterans. Auxiliaries provide support to their member affiliates as well as to their own veterans and community programs. The American Legion Auxiliary and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association are examples of auxiliaries that offer scholarships for which grandchildren of deceased veterans may apply.
- The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs administers the Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program, which provides educational benefits to dependents of deceased veterans. Adopted children of veterans who died in service or from disabilities that were the result of active duty may also qualify. Adoptees may include grandchildren.
